OBLIVION and OLYMPUS fend off JUDGMENT DAY

24 Apr 2013

SINGAPORE - OBLIVION and OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN hold off against a slew of new releases to rule the box office.

With no new major blockbusters in release, Golden Village Pictures unleashes JUDGMENT DAY - the 9th domestic release of the year, which debuts at no. 3 on the box office chart compiled by CFEA. The film is missing from Box Office Mojo but is reported in a Straits Times article on 24 Apr to have grossed S$200,000 (US$161,699) as of Monday (22 Apr).

Last month's domestic release GHOST CHILD debuts with US$179,396 from 23 screens and wrapped up its run with US$422,147 while TAXI! TAXI! collected US$373,460 from 21 screens during its opening weekend and finished with US$1,168,419. JUDGMENT DAY opens on 14 screens and may end up with around US$380,000.

The Thai horror LONG WEEKEND kicks off with US$110,564 from 14 screens for a decent US$7,897 screen average while Johnnie To's DRUG WAR begins with US$103,002 and a "can-be-better" screen average of US$5,722 on 18 screens.

Failing to get audiences excited are the Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe crime drama BROKEN CITY with a weak US$83,610 gross from 20 screens for a US$4,181 screen average and the horror DARK SKIES which collects US$56,987 from 15 screens for a US$3,799 screen average. BROKEN CITY's total gross including Wednesday sneaks is a dismal US$83,746.

Released on a single print is the Taiwanese comedy MACHI ACTION which grossed US$5,712 for a US$7,071 final including sneaks. Missing from Box Office Mojo last week but listed this week is the Aaron Kwok and Nick Cheung thriller CONSPIRATORS, which has grossed a terrible US$69,407 to date.

Last week's no. 1 film OBLIVION maintains its grip at the top of the box office with a further US$569,177 for a US$1,958,259 total to date. Meanwhile, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN holds steadfast at no. 2 and displays the kind of dropoff that's rarely seen. It's 2.2% dip is also the lowest for a second weekend drop this year. A final gross around US$1.2m is now a very likely scenario.

Overall, the box office collected an estimated US$1,683,774*, a 23.63% drop from the previous week and a 13.14% dip compared to the same frame a year ago when BATTLESHIP ruled the no. 1 spot for a second week in a row. The box office is likely to get a huge boost the next weekend with the release of IRON MAN 3.
